BIO:
Louis Bosa was born in Codroipo, Italy in 1905. The artist immigrated to Canada and finally settled in New York City in the 1920s where he studied art and modernism under the Art Students League directed by social realist painter John Sloan. In the 1930s and 40s the artist and his wife struggled financially, and his subject matter often included the laboring class in America, as in this work. His artistic career gained traction in the latter half of the 1940s, and throughout his life he became widely exhibited and respected as a teacher for the Art Students League, continuing to paint an array of genre, figure and landscape paintings, and eventually returning to Italy to paint urban and satirical scenes.
